The Jack London Italian Club is here!
You might be wondering what this is all about.
Let’s start with those who got the idea and are working at this project, still in progress: Massimo Loquenzi, from the Visit Oakland representative office in Italy, and Silvestro Serra, editor in chief of Touring monthly magazine.
And why Oakland? Jack London was born in San Francisco on January 12, 1876, but he spent most of his life on the other side of the Bay, in Oakland. Here, today he is remembered by a nice square overlooking the sea, the Jack London Square, which also hosts the replica of the cabin where he lived during the period of the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the bar, still perfectly operational, Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon, where sailors and adventurers who inspired the future novelist used to meet.
The spirit of the city of Oakland, young and rebellious at heart, mirrors the character and adventurous life of its most famous citizen, even if an adopted one.
The JL Club, as said still in progress, has two initial purpose:
- Yearly identifying the “Italian Jack London” among journalists, photographers, writers or travelers to be awarded with the title and a trip to Oakland and the San Francisco Bay. Sole condition is, once back, recounting the atmosphere, the characters, the inspirations gathered during the trip and while visiting the places of Jack London’s life.
- Yearly selecting a student from the IED photography course and inviting him to Oakland and the San Francisco Bay to study and research Jack London and, more generally, the literature and history of photography and the great American photographers.
The mission of Visit Oakland is very clear here: promoting Oakland as the starting point to visit the Bay of San Francisco, among the most beautiful and renowned global destinations.
In addition to Oakland and San Francisco, there is also another place associated with Jack London: Glen Ellen, the farm where he spent the last years of his short life, now turned into the Jack London State Historic Park, located one hour from Oakland, in Sonoma County.
About his talents as novelist, journalist and great traveler we know almost everything: the big news, recently discovered in Italy, is his passion and abilities as photographer.
“Between 1900 and 1916, Jack London took over 12,000 photographs. These are the key years of his literary production, when his fame consolidated until transforming him into a true American icon: the most read, talked about, paid and controversial US writer. And in those years, the camera becomes his inseparable companion on his explorations and journalistic adventures.” These words introduce the wonderful photographic book curated by Alessia Tagliaventi and published by Contrasto, Jack London Le strade dell’uomo – Fotografie, diari e reportage.
On Friday, March 1st, during the luncheon organized by Visit Oakland and Norwegian, the air carrier connecting Italy to the Oakland/San Francisco airport, the attendees will receive a copy of this book, illustrating this lesser known aspect of Jack London’s original personality.
